Aarav Giri Kumar

Giri, ’10 and Jaisy, ’10 Mohanan had a baby boy on April 19, 2013.  Aarav Giri Kumar weighed over 7 lbs. and is welcomed by his big brother, Evann.

Elsie Goossen

Elsie Franz Goossen, ’68

Elsie Franz Goossen died on March 22, 2013. She was born the fourth child of Alvin L. and Bertha (Franz) Goossen on July 20, 1945 in Colby, KS in the middle of wheat harvest.

Elsie grew up on a farm in the Mingo area and attended the first eight grades of school in Oakley, KS. The family moved to Newton the summer of 1959 and Elsie continued her high school education at Berean Acadamy in Elbing, KS., graduating in 1963. The next four years were spent at Grace Bible Institute, now Grace University, in Omaha, NE. She receiver a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education.

Her employment path took a different direction than she had expected. She got involved in electronic work in Newton and Peabody, KS. From there she went to work for Martin-Merietta Corp. in Colorado. During this time she graduated from the University of Phoenix with a degree in Business Administration. She developed her own business as a traveling book keeper maintaining a circuit of small businesses.

Survivors include siblings: Paul (Hildegard), Rhinelander, WI; Alva (Earlene), Vancouver, WA; Susie (Asher), Elkhart, KS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, a brother-in-law, Jacob Barkman, and a sister-in-law, Linda Goossen.

Violet M. Shonkwiler, ’81

Violet M. Shonkwiler was born on Jan 30, 1918.  She went home to her Lord on March 13, 2013.
She was preceded in death by husband, Donald Shonkwiler and son, Jon. She is survived by her children: Sharon Stoltzfus (Ron) of Tucson, AZ; Hudson Shonkwiler (Linda) of Omaha, Stephen Shonkwiler (Debbie) of Blair, NE and David Shonkwiler (Shelley) of Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Ivan Stauffer and sister, Betty Iness.

Marlene Hoover

Marlene Marie (Udd) Hoover, ’64

Marlene Marie Hoover, long time resident of Atlantic Iowa, entered into Glory on June 7, 2013 at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. at the age of 71. She was born October 24, 1941 in Mead, Neb. to Virgil Arvid and Loleta Marie Johnson Udd.
Marlene was united in marriage to Donald Ray Hoover on October 30, 1964. The couple served at churches in Shelton, Neb., St. Lawrence, S. D., Gordon, Neb. and Atlantic, Iowa.
She graduated from high school at Essex, Iowa and received her degree at Grace Bible Institute in 1964 where she met her husband. Marlene taught private piano lessons for 50 years. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework, helping at the church playing piano and organ and also teaching children’s Sunday school.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother Rodney Arvid Udd.
Survivors are her children: Randall Scott Hoover (Peggy) of Papillion, Neb.; Janelle Dawn Hoover Buschman (Mark) of Perryton, Texas; Deborah Marie Hoover Ried (Dwight) of Newell, Iowa; Wesley Jon Hoover (Tonna) of Atlantic, Iowa; one brother Stan Udd (Vi) from Missouri Valley, Iowa; two sisters Mary Ann Enns (Don) from Lincoln, Neb.; Norma Brunner (Roy) from Beverly, Mass.; and thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jocelyn Diane Schmidt was born on March 26, 2013 weighing 7lbs 11oz and was 20 inches long.  She joins brothers, Caleb and Aaron.

Daniel Ashcraft

Daniel Ira Ashcraft, ’68

Daniel Ira Ashcraft, 66, went to be with his Lord June 1, 2013 in Alamo, Tex. He was born to Jack & Virginia Ashcraft on December 5, 1946 in Enid, Okla. He served his country in the Army as a medic and a Green Beret from 1968-1971. He married the love of his life, Joan Petersen, in 1971. In his youth he entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Sharing the hope that is found in Jesus became his life-long passion. His life verse was I Corinthians 15:56, “Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” He spent 36 years fulfilling his calling as a missionary, living in Spain and Russia.

He was a loving husband, kind and gentle and always someone to lean on. He passed on to his children the value of hard work and the love of adventure. His grandchildren will always think of him as a fun-loving grandpa. He will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in the knowledge that we will be reunited with him in heaven.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joan Ashcraft; mother, Virginia Ashcraft, Alamo, Tex.; siblings, Rene Sprunger, Omaha, Nebr., Jay (Janice) Ashcraft, Livermore, Calif., Glenn (Sue) Ashcraft, Spain. Children, Candy Ashcraft, Lincoln, Nebr.; Lindy (Dane) Sorenson, Normal, Ill.; Matt (Rachel) Ashcraft, Spain. Grandchildren, Logan, Jada & Owen Ashcraft & Zoe, Moses & Acacia Sorenson.

Marcella Regier

Marcella "Marcy" Elaine Regier, ’70

Marcella “Marcy” Elaine Regier of Winona Lake, Ind. passed away at 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at her residence at the age of 65.

She was a resident of Kosciusko County, Ind. for the past 35 years, where she was a member of Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, and Moms In Touch of Warsaw, Ind. Marcy was a 1965 graduate of Central Christian High School in Hutchinson, Kan. She then attended Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Nebr. and received her Bachelors Degree in 1970.

She moved to Winona Lake in 1978, and worked at Grace College in Winona Lake as an Administrative Assistant in the Dean of Students office from 1995-1999. She dedicated her life to her family and was known for her radiant smile, and her mission as a prayer warrior.

Marcy was born on June 13, 1947 in Omaha, Nebr. to John Harder and Bertha (Zielke) Harder. On September 9, 1972 in Hutchinson Kan. she was married to Melvin “Mel” Ray Regier, who survives in Winona Lake, Ind.

She will also be lovingly remembered by her three daughters: Sarah (Aaron) Scantlen, Winona Lake, Ind.; Liz (Tim) Sprankle, Warsaw, Ind; Bekah (Jeremy) Miller, Chicago, Ill; five grandchildren: Mahlia, Josiah, and Hezekiah Scantlen; Claire and Margot Sprankle. Also surviving are one brother Loren (Maylene) Harder, Perryton, Tex; and one sister Velma Bartlow, Seattle, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Girl born to Greg, ’99 and Amber, ’00 Reimer

Catharina (Cate) Reimer was born on January 2, 2013 in Colorado to Greg, 1999 & Amber  (Yergler), 2000 Reimer. She was 20 inches long and weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce. She joins big sisters Adrianna (age 7) and Bree (age 3).
