New Award Highlights Coach Classen

Coach Jim Classen, former student ‘61-62, was on hand for Baccalaureate 2017 for the inauguration of the Jim Classen Athletic Ministry Integration Award.

This award honored Coach Classen for his service to Grace University athletics for 34 years as Athletic Director, head coach for men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and cross country, and instructor in the Physical Education Department. He began his career in athletics as a Christian who happened to coach, and grew into becoming a Christian coach who discipled many and had a tremendous impact on lives during his time at Grace University. Coach Classen and his wife, Dot, were active in many aspects of campus life including leading the Married Student Fellowship for many years.

Coach Classen established Grace athletics on a foundation of Christian ministry, and he recognized athletics as a vehicle where students could grow in godliness, excellence, and sportsmanship. This new award recognizes the Athletic Department’s continued commitment to those values and will honor one graduating student-athlete who exemplifies an integrated lifestyle of ministry through athletics.

The recipient will receive will receive an award, as well as have his/her name listed on a plaque hung in the Athletic Department that denotes each year’s receipient.

The first recipient of the Jim Classen Athletic Ministry Integration Award was given to teacher education major and volleyball player Amber Carlson. Amber was the team captain for 3 years and excelled in the classroom as well. Amber embodies the qualities of godliness, excellence and sportsmanship on the court, in the classroom and in the areas she served.
