Darrell Fast, ’60

Darrell Fast, former pastor at Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton, Kansas, died peacefully on June 11, 2017, in Leamington, Ontario, Canada. He was born in Mt. Lake, Minn., on Sept. 5, 1939. He also served Mennonite churches in Leamington and Toronto.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta; children, Doug (Michelle) and Larissa; as well as grandchildren, Avery and Britton. He leaves his siblings, Don Fast (Diane), Evelyn Schofield and Elisabeth Smith (Aaron); as well as his sisters-in-law, Anita Janzen and Betty Ann Bontrager (Merv).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry L. and Anna (Rempel) Fast; a brother-in-law, Charles Schofield; a nephew, Jeffrey Christopher Fast; and a niece, Julie Ann Schofield.

Darrell will be remembered by nieces, nephews, colleagues and many friends. A memorial service was held June 17, 2017, in Leamington.

Linda Mae Loewens Friesen, ’51

Linda Mae Friesen, the daughter of Henry S. and Nettie (Seibel) Loewens was born on April 10, 1932, in Mountain Lake, Minn. She passed away on July 19, 2017, at the age of 85.

After graduating from Mountain Lake High School in 1950, she attended Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Neb. She married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Friesen, on December 30, 1952. They made their home and farmed together near Mountain Lake until 1986. In 1989, they moved to Mountain Lake. Linda was a wonderful wife and mother. She and Ralph were married almost 61 years, with Ralph predeceasing her in October 2013. Together they raised three children and kept very busy on the farm. She loved to sing and often sang duets with Ralph, a ladies sextet, and the church choir. She also worked at the Mountain Lake Public Library, volunteered at Good Samaritan Village, and Care and Share. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Linda is survived by her children: Stanton (Theresa) Friesen of Brandon, S.D., Bruce (Darla) Friesen of Delft, Minn., and Michelle (Kevin) Ratzlaff of Mountain Lake, Minn.; Linda was preceded in death by her husband; parents; granddaughter Sheila Embertson; brothers: Orlando (Marie) Loewens, LaVern (Amanda) Loewens; sister Evelyn (John) Stoesz; sister-in-law Dora Loewens; and brothers-in-law Vern Suderman, Art Rahn and Jim Schultz.

Rev. Clarence W. (Bill) Landis, ’74

Rev. Clarence W. (Bill) Landis ’74 retired in July after more than 41 years as a pastor in the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church. Over those years he served in five different locations in seven churches across Northern Illinois: Buffalo Grove and Prairie View UMCs, 1975-1980; Sheridan and Norway UMCs, 1980-1989; Savanna UMC, 1989-2002;  Sycamore UMC, 2002-2013; and his last church, Antioch UMC, 2013-2017.  Bill and his wife Jo have retired to the community of Woodstock, Ill., near Chicago.

David Bergmann, ’93

David Edward Bergmann, age 51, of Aurora, Neb., passed away on Monday, July 3, 2017, at the scene of an accident near York, Nebraska.

David, the son of Edward and Barbara (Zezulak) Bergmann, was born in Omaha on February 19, 1966. David graduated from Weeping Water High School in 1984, attended Central College of McPherson, Kansas, and graduated in 1993 from Grace Bible College. He entered the U.S. Army on September 17, 1986, and was honorably discharged after serving in Germany in 1988. David married Brenda Hatfield on June 24, 1989, at Bonners Ferry, Idaho. They made their home in Omaha, then Arapahoe, before moving to Aurora in 2000. David worked for Penner Manufacturing as a welder for the last 12 years. He also worked as a part-time bus driver for Arrow Stage Lines in Grand Island since 2016. David and Brenda had just celebrated their 28th anniversary. David was a member of the Aurora Evangelical Free Church. He enjoyed kayaking with his son, gardening, riding his bike, movie trivia, history, working out and spending time with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Hannah Lee, and father-in-law, Lynn Hatfield. Those who remain to cherish his memory are his wife Brenda; son, Ethan Bergmann of Aurora; father and mother, Edward and Barbara Bergmann of Weeping Water, Neb.; brothers, Jeffery (Tina) Bergmann, Kyle ( Ellen) Bergmann; sister Christine (Doug) Freitag; mother-in-law Rosalie Hatfield; brother and sister-in-law Allen and Linda Hatfield, Lynda and Leroy Dowd, and Roy and Marlyn Mastre. He is also survived by several nieces and nephew and many close friends.

Linda (Wall) Krahn, ’50

Linda (Wall) Krahn ’50,  age 88, of Mt. Lake, Minn., died June 22, 2017. Linda Helen Wall was born Oct. 2, 1928, to John and Mary (Fast) Wall in Mt. Lake. She grew up on a farm in Carson Township of Cottonwood County, where she loved the outdoors. She attended District 16 South Banner School before graduating from Bingham Lake High School in 1947. Linda continued her education at Grace Bible Institute.

Linda accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior, was baptized and joined Immanuel Mennonite Church, where she received Bible teaching and helped with Sunday school and release time classes. Linda also taught Vacation Bible School and counseled at camp. In 1963, Linda married Richard Krahn. She enjoyed being a homemaker, gardening and helping her husband in the grocery business. When Richard and Linda retired in 1999, they enjoyed doing things together at home and church. Survivors include her husband, Richard Krahn of Mt. Lake; a daughter, Mary (Dick) Carpenter of Peyton, Colo.; and a son, David Krahn of Mt. Lake.
