Zelma L. Rothhaar, ’71

Zelma L. Rothhaar, 80, of rural Bucyrus stepped into glory Friday morning, May 18, 2012 at her residence.

She was born on November 10, 1931 in Bloomville to the late Halcyon and Laura (Smith) Detterman.  She graduated from Bloomville High School in 1949. Zelma married Kevin W. Rothhaar on April 30, 1950.  Zelma was a member of First United Baptist Church in Tiffin.  She was a homemaker, mother, pastor’s wife and teacher.  When Kevin was called to the ministry, they moved to Omaha, Neb. where she studied education at Grace College of the Bible and received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  Her teaching career included schools in Nebraska, North Dakota and Wayside Christian School in Bucyrus.

Before falling ill, Zelma enjoyed worshiping her Savior through the gift of music as a soloist, pianist and with her accordion.

Zelma is survived by her loving husband of 62 years; their four sons, Alan (Jean Ann) Rothhaar of Nashville, Mich., Daniel (Rosalyn) Rothhaar of Burlington, Ky., James (Debra) Rothhaar of Ligonia, Ind. and David (Suzanne) Rothhaar of Bucyrus; 10 grandchildren, Timothy Rothhaar, Ricky Rothhaar, Krista (Jacob) Noorman, Paul (Kaeli) Rothhaar, Brian (Lisa) Rothhaar, Sarah Rothhaar, Joel (Sarah) Rothhaar, Jenna Rothhaar, Anna Rothhaar, and Tyler Rothhaar; three great grandchildren, Zachary Noorman, Chloe Noorman and Eli Rothhaar; two sisters, Bernice (Clifford) Price and Patricia Clark; three brothers, Charles Detterman, Gerald (Donna) Detterman and Kenneth (Evalyn) Detterman.

In addition to her parents, Zelma was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Detterman.

1971 Ronald L. Zuercher

1971 Ronald L. Zuercher, 62, of Smithville, Mo., passed away on Thursday (Feb. 24, 2011).

He was born on May 3, 1948, in Hollywood, Calif., to Leslie and Elsie Gertrude (Zimmermann) Zuercher. Ron grew up in Benton, and in 1966, he graduated from Berean Academy in Elbing. He later received bachelor’s degrees from Grace University in Omaha, Neb., and Wichita State University.

On April 14, 1979, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Ruth De Smet. After their marriage, they lived in Smithville where they made their home.

Ron worked at Gospel Missionary Union/Avant Ministries in Kansas City for 35 years as a graphic designer and photographer.  He was a member of Emanuel Bible Church in Smithville for 33 years.

Ron is survived by his wife, Becky of the home; children, David Zuercher and wife, Samantha, Sharon Zuercher, Anna Roberts and husband, Michael, Stephanie Zuercher and Jordan Zuercher; five grandchildren, Taylor, Owen, Hudson, Elise and baby boy Roberts; brother, Raymond Zuercher and wife, Janell; two nieces, Rachelle Clair and husband, Matt and Katelynn Zuercher; nephew, Jared Zuercher; father-in-law, Wally De Smet; and other relatives and many friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lynda Lambert; and mother-in-law, Mary Lou De Smet.

Visitation was Monday at First Baptist Church in Smithville.  The funeral service is at 3 p.m. today at the church.  Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swiss Church Cemetery in Whitewater.
