He was born near Dolton, So. Dakota on March 21, 1935 into a family of 3 siblings, including a twin brother, Jesse. Jim attended Hilltop Country School. His most important decision was to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at 15 years of age, and his greatest passion in life was to share his faith with others.
He married his sweetheart, Eileen, on October 17, 1958 near Marion, So. Dakota, and they enjoyed almost 54 years of wedded bliss. He served in the U.S. Army immediately following his wedding.
After graduating from Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, Nebraska in 1971, he and his wife Eileen became the directors of Child Evangelism Fellowship of the Black Hills in Rapid City. His career included many employment adventures such as farming, truck driving, locksmith and construction worker. Most recently he was employed at Sam’s Club.
He and Eileen spent several years volunteering in overseas missions, where he was his happiest serving, praying for and encouraging others. One of his favorite scriptures was Isaiah 61:1 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” Jim’s heart desire was that everyone know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Ortman, of Rapid City, SD; daughter, Rhonda (David) Nielsen of Black Hawk, SD, and daughter, Valerie (Bill) Landis of Lancaster, PA; five grandchildren: Joshua (Chelsey) Nielsen, Box Elder, SD; Lindsey (Bruno) Matos, Vitoria, Brazil; Josiah Landis (fiancé Jordan Wilke), Guyana, South America; Rebekah Landis, Lancaster, PA; Rachel Landis, Lancaster, PA; one great-grandson, Alijah Ballard, Box Elder, SD; his brother, Jesse (Jeneane) Ortman, Marion, SD; his sister, Mable Underwood, Sioux Falls, SD.
